About Mike Baker

Following a thirteen-year tenure in the United States Marine Corps, Mike Baker embarked on a career in Law Enforcement, beginning in the Gwinnett County Sheriff's office. Over the ensuing 16 years, he demonstrated a remarkable ability to multitask and maintain a positive attitude in the face of adversity. As a Basic Jailer, Mike ensured order and discipline among inmates while fostering a safe and clean environment. His responsibilities extended to preparing investigations, dispensing meals and medications, and managing detainee inquiries.

Within the Field Operations Division, Mike’s expertise expanded to the Warrants Unit, Family Violence Unit, and the Automatic License Plate Recognition (LPR) Unit. His achievements included serving warrants, conducting research, and implementing the LPR program in 2009. As one of the key deputies in the StarChase program in 2018, Michael's innovative contributions mitigated high-speed pursuits, showcasing his ability to think outside the box.

As a Deputy Sheriff, Mike also played pivotal roles in the Training Division, Court Security Operations, and Collateral Duties such as Field Training Officer (FTO) and SWAT Operator. These roles underscored his commitment to not only executing duties but also passing on his knowledge and skills to the next generation of law enforcement professionals.

Mike’s Marine Corps service commenced with his enlistment in the United States Marine Corps in 1990. Serving in the 2nd Amphibious Assault Battalion from 1990 to 1994, he earned the rank of Corporal before transitioning to the 8th Tank Battalion in 1995. Rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant, Mike concluded his military service in 2003 with an honorable discharge from reserve duty.

Mike is the recipient of the Combat Action Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal with three battle stars, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Kuwait Liberation Medal, and the Navy Unit Commendation Medal. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mike has continued to invest in his education, earning several certifications, including P.O.S.T. Certification, Lidar (Laser) Operator, and various instructor certifications, highlighting his commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
